![]() ![]() ![]() It is worth mentioning that anyone whose PC is creaking along under the weight of its current applications should think twice about Office Accounting, then give it a miss or buy a new machine. The paid-for version, Office Accounting Professional, includes all of the above plus: a built-in cashflow forecaster, business overview dashboard, job tracking, stock management, multi-user access with role-based security controls, sales and purchase order processing, multi-currency accounting, point-of-sale integration, 40 additional reports - and more. The free version of Office Accounting offers a broad range of accounting functions, including banking, purchases, sales, quotes, cash and invoice VAT accounting, a range of pre-defined reports, a Pay Pal option, and (accountants will be pleased to find) an Accountants Transfer facility, so that practitioners can easily share data with the client. They also benefit from the muscle of the Microsoft marketing machine, which is formidable, and will certainly help sell the product to small businesses - not that they will need much encouragement to use the product. When accountants join the Microsoft Professional Accountants Network (MPAN) they become members of a 'community' of fellow professionals, akin to Sage Accountants Club and the Iris Plus Partner Programme, but in addition they get free software (Office Accounting Professional 2008 and Office Small Business Edition 2007), free training, and free technical support until September 2009. But the freebies designed to make Office Accounting appealing to practitioners are as good as money in the bank. ![]() It's done its research, and knows that if it wants to dominate the entry-level sector, it will need an army of 'helpers' prepared to do the necessary hand-holding, so it is throwing money at accountants. At the end of 2007, Microsoft launched its Office Accounting range in the UK, and fundamentally changed the domestic marketplace for entry-level systems because while Office Accounting Professional costs £149 for a single user and £399.99 for a three-user licence, Office Accounting Express is available as a download absolutely free - and that's just one of the weapons Microsoft is using to knock spots off the opposition. ![]()
